Inspired by natural philosophers (Galileo Galilei, Baruch Spinoza), and early explorers (Jacques Cartier, Maria Sibylla Merian, Louis Antoine de Bougainville, Jean-François de La Pérouse, Jeanne Baret, or Jules Dumont d'Urville) and nurtured by academic mentors I have kept detailed, illustrated scientific logs during my research career.
As a visual learner, I often expressed special moments and mundane life events in drawings in my childhood. Later on I developed the habit of jotting down personal impressions in my "carnets de bord" throughout my years of seafloor exploration, field work, or travel around the globe. I have been known to alongside rigorous documentation of the digital or analog data that I collected, adorn my notebooks with a professor's caricature, the lyrics of a song heard in the background, or a drawing of the landscape in front of my eyes.
Sketching, scribbling, and musing in these "carnets" is my way of slowing down and observe, reflect, absorb, ask questions, and ultimately learn about the world around me.
